a. Introduction

The search language of CDS/ISIS is based on boolean algebra, which provides a convenient way of expressing logical operations between classes.  In practice, each search term associated with a given record can be seen as representing the class of all those records associated with that term. Thus, by expressing logical operations betweeen search terms, the user can define precisely the class of records to be retriewed in response to his/her needs.
