The search language of CDS/ISIS is based on Boolean algebra, which provides a convenient way of expressing logic operations between classes.  Each search term associated with a given record can, in fact, be viewed as representing the class of all those records associated with that term. Thus by expressing logical operations between search terms you can define precisely the class of records to be retrieved in response to your needs.
